Southern Africa Explorer Tour

1. Tuesday: AUSTRALIA / JOHANNESBURG

Tour members depart from their respective home cities to Perth where they will connect to South African Airways flight to Johannesburg.

2. Wednesday: JOHANNESBURG / PILANESBERG NATIONAL PARK

Early morning landing and after a three hour road journey we arrive at our game lodge. Afternoon: ranger escorted game drive.    BAKUBUNG LODGE (Dinner & Breakfast).

3. Thursday: PILANESBERG NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast we visit Sun City and the “Lost City”. Afternoon ranger escorted game drive. BAKUBUNG LODGE (Dinner & Breakfast).

4. Friday: PILANESBERG NATIONAL PARK / CAPE TOWN

After breakfast we depart for Johannesburg Airport for our domestic flight to Cape Town. Upon arrival (weather permitting) we take the spectacularcable car ride up Table Mountain. Our comfortable hotel is a 10 minute drive from the city.  CITY LODGE PINELANDS (Breakfast).

5. Saturday: CAPE TOWN

Today we drive along the Atlantic Ocean to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet.      CITY LODGE PINELANDS (Breakfast)

6. Sunday: CAPE TOWN

This morning we make our way to Tableview to photograph the famous view of Table Mountain. Located on the Atlantic Ocean, the water is icy cold. From here we continue to Stellenbosch. This Cape Dutch town was founded in 1688. Lunch is at a well-known restaurant overlooking the Indian Ocean. CITY LODGE PINELANDS (Breakfast)

7. Monday: CAPE TOWN

This morning we tour Cape Town city or you may wish to visit the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens situated against the slopes of Table Mountain. CITY LODGE PINELANDS (Breakfast)

8. Tuesday: CAPE TOWN / OUDTSHOORN

After an early breakfast we depart for the Ostrich farming town of Oudtshoorn travelling through fruit and wheat growing areas of the Western Cape before crossing the mountains to Barrydale for lunch. We arrive at our hotel late afternoon for an overnight stay.   RIEMPIE ESTATE (Dinner & Breakfast)

9. Wednesday: OUDTSHOORN / KNYSNA

This morning there will be an opportunity to ride an ostrich. After our visit to an Ostrich farm we cross the mountains back to the coast and arrive at our hotel for a two night stay. PREMIER HOTEL (Breakfast)

10. Thursday: KNYSNA

After breakfast we take a short tour of Knysna, including the Knysna Heads. Balance of day free. An optional excursion to the Garden Route Game Reserve for an afternoon game drive and dinner.  PREMIER HOTEL (Breakfast)

11. Friday: KNYSNA / PORT ELIZABETH

After breakfast we continue our drive along the Garden Route stopping at Bloukrans Bridge, site of the world’s highest bungee jump. We have lunch at the famous surfing capital of Jeffreys Bay before continuing to Port Elizabeth where we arrive mid-afternoon. CITY LODGE (Breakfast)

12. Saturday: PORT ELIZABETH / EAST LONDON

This morning we depart for Addo Elephant Reserve. After game viewing and lunch we depart for East London for an overnight stay. HOLIDAY INN (Breakfast)

13. Sunday: EAST LONDON / INGELI FOREST

Early departure for a scenic drive through the Transskei. On route we visit the Nelson Mandela Museum at Qunu. We travel through rolling countryside to the Ingeli Forest for an overnight stay. INGELI FOREST LODGE (Dinner & Breakfast)

14. Monday: INGELI FOREST / ESHOWE

After breakfast we make our way north to Durban and after lunch we continue to Shakaland. Built as a traditional Zulu village, we are taken on a Zulu cultural tour. After dinner there is a spectacular dance display. SHAKALAND (Dinner & Breakfast)

15. Tuesday: HLUHLUWE

This morning we make our way to St Lucia where we enjoy a 3 hour boat cruise to view hippo and crocodiles. After lunch we continue to our lodge which is situated in a private game reserve. BONAMANZI LODGE (Dinner & Breakfast)

16. Wednesday: HLUHLUWE

Early morning ranger escorted 4WD game drive in the nearby Hluhluwe National Park, famous for its large rhino population. The park also contains the BIG 5, as well as zebra, giraffe and nyala. The scenery consists of rolling hills and valleys and we return to our lodge for lunch. Afternoon at leisure. BONAMANZI LODGE (Dinner & Breakfast)

17. Thursday: HLUHLUWE / MBABANE

After breakfast we continue our drive through Zululand. We travel via Pongola and Piet Retief before crossing the border and continuing to the capital Mbabane. MANTENGA LODGE ( Breakfast)

18. Friday: MBABANE / HAZYVIEW

After breakfast we make our way to the South African border and Kruger National Park. After game viewing we continue to Hazyview and our accommodation. SANBONANI RESORT (Dinner & Breakfast)

19. Saturday: HAZYVIEW

After breakfast we commence a tour of the Drakensberg Escarpment, where we visit Pilgrims Rest, a historic goldmining town; Bourkes Luck Potholes, a unique geological formation; and Blyde River Canyon, renowned for its spectacular views. SANBONANI RESORT (Dinner & Breakfast)

20. Sunday: HAZYVIEW

Early morning departure for Kruger National Park. Here we have an opportunity to see the Big 5. Lunch is at a rest camp in the Park where there is a good opportunity to observe various species of bird life. SANBONANI RESORT (Dinner & Breakfast)

21. Monday: HAZYVIEW / CENTURION

After breakfast we drive to Lydenburg via the Long Tom Pass at an altitude higher than Mount Kosciusko. From here we continue via Pretoria to Centurion for an overnight stay. CENTURION LAKE HOTEL (Breakfast)

22. Tuesday: CENTURION / AUSTRALIA

For tour members not continuing to Victoria Falls and Botswana, an optional tour is available to Soweto, Southern Africa’s largest township. This fascinating tour continues to the Apartheid Museum and mid-afternoon you will be transferred to the airport to join your South African Airways flight to Perth.

23. Wednesday: AUSTRALIA

Arrive in Perth at 1300. After clearing customs and immigration you will connect to your home destination. Alternatively you may wish to have a stopover in Perth where we can arrange accommodation and car hire.

Your Tour Leaders

General Manager Sean Lues was born in Zimbabwe, knows Southern Africa & Tanzania intimately and will be escorting a number of departures. He has personally escorted more than 50 African safaris.

Former Overland Tour Leader Sid McKinley has lived in South Africa for more than 18 years and knows both the Explorer and Discoverer Tours. He has an excellent knowledge of wildlife.
