Mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance for Zanzibar: What You Need to Know
As of October 1st, 2024, all visitors, including both adults and children, must purchase mandatory travel insurance before entering Zanzibar. The insurance is priced at USD $44 per person and must be arranged prior to travel. It remains valid for 92 days and covers multiple entries during that period, but only while you are in Zanzibar.
This mandatory insurance can only be purchased from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC), even if you already have other insurance coverage. Upon completion of your purchase, you’ll receive your policy via email, which includes a QR code link to the official purchase platform (not yet live). Proof of this insurance must be presented upon arrival in Zanzibar, and failure to provide it may result in denied entry.
It’s important to note that travellers are responsible for purchasing their own insurance in advance.

Your policy documents, including the policy number, coverage dates, and terms, will be emailed directly to you. Be sure to keep a copy with you during your visit to Zanzibar.
Do You Still Need This Insurance If You Have Other Coverage?
Yes. The Zanzibar government requires this specific travel insurance for entry. Your existing insurance may not cover certain risks, such as emergency evacuation or repatriation, which this insurance is designed to cover. This ensures comprehensive protection during your time on the island, giving you peace of mind.
